Online Therapy in Coral Gables
“Why does this keep happening to me?”
Online Therapy for High-Functioning Anxiety in Coral Gables
You’ve asked it in the car. In the shower. In the dark.
If you’re managing high-functioning anxiety in the Coral Gables area, you probably know what’s wrong. You know you overthink. You know you’re a perfectionist. You know you’re afraid of slowing down.
You’ve tried strategies. You’ve read articles. You’ve worked hard to change.
But the anxiety keeps returning. Maybe in a different form, but the same underlying loop.
That’s not because you’re doing something wrong. It’s because the real work isn’t managing the symptom one more time. It’s connecting the dots you’ve been living.
The anxiety isn’t random. It usually has a beginning.

High-functioning anxiety is often invisible to everyone except the person living it.
You might appear composed in meetings, yet afterward you replay every word you said, convinced you said something wrong. You might deliver excellent work and immediately doubt whether it was good enough. You might maintain a full life—career, relationships, commitments—while running on adrenaline and rarely feeling truly calm.
The exhaustion isn’t obvious. You don’t cancel plans or call in sick. You show up. But internally, you’re managing:
- Racing thoughts that won’t slow down, especially at night
- Perfectionism that makes even small tasks feel loaded
- The constant pressure to be “on,” to perform, and not disappoint anyone
- Difficulty trusting that things are actually okay
- A sense that if you stopped pushing, everything would collapse
- Guilt when you rest, because resting feels like failure
- The fear that if people really knew how anxious you are, they’d see you differently
Many high-functioning anxious people don’t seek help because they believe, “If I’m succeeding, something must be working.” The trap is that success is costing you your peace.
How Pattern-Focused Therapy Works
High-functioning anxiety often traces to an earlier pattern—maybe you learned that your worth depended on performance, or that your needs were less important than keeping the peace, or that slowing down meant abandonment or invisibility.
These adaptations made sense once. They probably protected you. They might have even saved you. But they’re still running in the background, even though the original threat is long gone.
Most people don’t need another coping skill. They need someone who can connect the dots they’ve been living.
In our work together, we find the original pattern and help you understand:
- Why this particular form of “always on” made sense
- What continues to activate it now
- How it’s affecting your relationships, health, and sense of self
- What becomes possible when you’re not running on anxiety
“Oh. That explains everything.” Thirty years reorganize at once. Events you’d filed under bad luck, bad picker, or something wrong with me snap into one intelligible line.
The goal isn’t to eliminate your drive or turn you into someone less ambitious. It’s to separate adaptive high standards—the kind that help you do good work—from maladaptive perfectionism, which exhausts you and never lets satisfaction land.
Questions People Ask About High-Functioning Anxiety Therapy in Coral Gables
What’s the difference between regular anxiety and high-functioning anxiety?
Regular anxiety often shows up as avoidance—you might cancel plans, call in sick, or avoid situations that trigger worry. High-functioning anxiety doesn’t always look like anxiety at all. You get things done. You meet deadlines. You’re reliable. You might even be successful.
But internally, you’re managing constant worry, self-criticism, and the fear that if you slow down, everything will fall apart. It’s the anxiety that drives overachievement, not the anxiety that paralyzes.
Therapy isn’t about fixing something broken; it’s about understanding why you learned to survive this way, and whether it’s still serving you.
How long does it take to see results?
Pattern work is different from symptom management. In the first 2–3 sessions, we map where the pattern began and what keeps activating it. Most clients describe feeling more understood in that phase alone—there’s relief in recognition. You stop being a mystery to yourself.
Meaningful shifts in how anxiety shows up often begin around session 6–8. Most clients continue for 10–16 sessions before the pattern feels fundamentally different.
You don’t need to commit to a year upfront. We work in 4-session check-in blocks. After each block, you can assess whether the work feels helpful and decide to continue, adjust, or pause.
Do you accept insurance in Coral Gables?
Yes. I’m in-network with Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, and UMR.
Some clients prefer private pay for greater privacy and continuity of care—when you pay directly, there’s no diagnosis code going to insurance, no session limits, and no insurance company involved in your treatment decisions.
We can discuss which option makes sense for you during a consultation. If you choose private pay and your plan offers out-of-network reimbursement, I can provide a superbill so you can request reimbursement directly from your insurer.
What does a session actually look like?
We meet securely by video, and you can join from anywhere in Florida. Sessions are 50 minutes.
Your first session is mostly listening. I’m understanding when this pattern began, what it protected you from, what it costs you now, and what you actually want to feel differently.
Subsequent sessions are more collaborative. We slow down the pattern so you can see it working in real time—your thoughts, your body’s response, and the decisions you make. Then we practice responding differently.
Why pattern-focused therapy instead of CBT, medication, or meditation apps?
They’re not mutually exclusive. Many clients do therapy alongside medication or use meditation between sessions.
CBT is excellent for learning new thought patterns. Meditation can calm your nervous system. Medication can reduce symptoms. Pattern-focused work does something different: it explains why the anxiety attached to this particular cluster of circumstances.
When you understand the origin of a pattern—when it started and what it protected you from—the present moment often feels less random and more understandable.
