Understanding Your Benefits

“It depends on your plan.” Here’s what that actually means.

Having active insurance does not necessarily mean therapy will cost nothing. A few different parts of your plan can affect what you owe. Choose a term below for a plain-English explanation.

A copay is a set amount you may owe for a covered session.

Some insurance plans require a fixed copay for outpatient behavioral-health services. Your specific plan determines whether you have a copay and how much it is.

Questions you can ask your insurance plan

  1. What is my copay for outpatient behavioral-health therapy?
  2. Is my telehealth copay different from an in-person visit?
  3. Does my deductible apply before my copay benefits begin?

A deductible is an amount you may need to pay before certain benefits begin.

If your plan has a deductible that has not yet been met, you may be financially responsible for a larger portion of the session cost. The exact amount depends on your insurance plan.

Questions you can ask your insurance plan

  1. What is my deductible?
  2. How much of my deductible have I already met this year?
  3. Does outpatient behavioral-health treatment apply to my deductible?

Coinsurance means you may pay a percentage of the covered amount.

Instead of a flat copay, some plans require you to pay a percentage of the allowed or contracted amount. Your insurance company determines the percentage and when it applies.

Questions you can ask your insurance plan

  1. Do I have coinsurance for outpatient behavioral-health services?
  2. What percentage am I responsible for?
  3. Does the coinsurance begin only after my deductible is met?

Private pay gives you a clearly stated session rate.

If you choose not to use insurance, you pay the private-pay fee listed on this page. No insurance claim is submitted for that session.

Worth knowing

  1. Private-pay rates are stated before treatment begins.
  2. You may request a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs.
  3. Choosing private pay means the session is not submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement.

The Right Fit

Insurance gets you through the door. What happens after that is the real question.

Finding a therapist accepting insurance Florida residents can access online is only one part of finding the right therapist. The relationship matters too.

For more than 25 years, I’ve worked with adults who may look capable, responsible and steady on the outside while privately carrying anxiety, relationship stress, emotional exhaustion, self-doubt, perfectionism, or the feeling that they are responsible for everyone around them.

My approach is pattern-focused. We don’t only talk about what happened this week. We look at what keeps repeating — in relationships, family, work, anxiety, and the way you see yourself.

Everybody needs a Bonnie sometimes.
